Researchers Use New Technology in Generating Adult Stem Cells

by stem cell treatment on May 25, 2012

Stem cells treatments have gained recognition all over the world due to their effectiveness in treating various diseases. However, it takes time to harvest stem cells especially from embryos. This is why researchers from the University of Calgary used a machine worth $600 in generating stem cells from adults instead of embryos.

The process is called bioreactor technology which involves creating millions of stem cells from adults faster than ever before.

Researchers are aware of the limitations of using adult stem cells. In fact, researchers discovered that they can possibly cause cancer based on their experiments with rats. Fortunately, they are now using a breakthrough technology in making stem cells that keep rats free from cancer.

According to Dr. Derrick Rancourt, this new discovery can cause positive changes since researchers can now create numerous stem cells at a shorter period of time. He added that these cells can later be used in regenerative medicine treatments such as cell therapy.

One of the reasons why researchers from Calgary will use this new technology is because they want to use human stem cells in growing new bones and cartilage in treating patients with arthritis.

Other researchers from different parts of the world also expressed their interest in this new technology. Experts believe that stem cells can eventually cure complicated diseases like Alzheimer’s.
